The New Logo

The Tree as location— The image of the tree connects us to Eagan whose logo is also a tree. But the tree image is also rooted in scripture. Our story with God begins in the Garden of Eden where the Tree of Life is planted in the middle. The Biblical story ends with all creation returning to the Tree of Life.

On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month, and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

(Genesis 22: 2-5)

The Tree as core values — In the natural world, trees play an important connecting, growing and serving the world they are planted in. So too, as a congregation, we are called to be connected to God and neighbor. We are invited to grow in our relationship with God and neighbor. Then led out into the world to serve the needs of the world.

The Leaves as the Church — The Church is not a building, a steeple or a “resting place” as the old hymn goes. The Church is people —the body of Christ in the world — the priesthood of all believers — called together to transform the world through love of God and neighbor.

The different colored leaves reflect different people with different gifts. The colors also communicate our commitment to being an inclusive congregation.

At Advent UMC we celebrate human diversity and recognize the sacred worth and dignity of all persons. We affirm the full inclusion of persons regardless of race, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, physical or mental capacity, education, economic or marital status.

Advent as identity — Advent means “arrival” or the start of an event. Something new is coming. In the Church, Advent is a season preparing for the arrival of Jesus. Purple is the color of the season.

The colorful leaves can also be seen as confetti being thrown in celebration of something new about to happen. In the center of it all is a person — is it Christ or Christ living in you?

What is it that we are celebrating? Our celebrations are rooted in these words from the UMC Book of Discipline:

“Whenever the United Methodist Church has had a clear sense of mission, God has used our Church to save persons, heal relationships, transform social structures, and spread scriptural holiness, thereby, changing the world.”

BOD - Mission and Ministry of the Church pg. 92

When we are living fully into our mission there is cause for celebration. New life is bursting forth and God’s people are living abundantly. We hope this image invites people to come and join us in the mission of making disciples for the transformation of the world.
