IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING

What if "church" were a verb instead of a noun?

What if church was not a location to come to and stay within, but a base of operation for expressing your faith by moving out into communities and around the globe to become part of God's plan for world transformation?

If you found such a "place," would you come?

You are invited to explore the Advent UMC website to see for yourself how the people of Advent are rethinking and renewing what the church is and should be in the 21st century.

We are an active and engaged faith community.  We hope you will find a doorway at Advent that you will be comfortable walking through in order to connect with God, with the world around you, and with a community of people that will love and care for you and help you along the journey of your life.

GROWING

Our Purpose Statement
To cooperate with the Holy Spirit,
by inviting all people into relationship with Jesus Christ
through engaging worship, service and spiritual growth.
What if "church" was thought of not as a building, but as thousands of doors, each of them opening to a different concept or experience of church, so that whoever knocks might find a journey to call their own?

INSIGHT [in-sahyt] noun: divine impartation of knowledge, or wisdom: a penetrating understanding, as of a complex situation or problem; the ability to perceive clearly or deeply the inner nature of things.
IGNITE [ig-nahyt] transitive verb: to set afire or kindle; to heat up, set in motion, spark; intransitive verb: to catch fire; to begin to glow.
"Insight," our mid-high youth ministry for students in grades 6-8, focuses on activities and studies that help students learn more about God, their relationship to God & each other, and helps them keep God "in sight" at all times!

Grades 6 & 7 meet Sunday mornings at 9 & 10:45 worship while 8th grade students attend worship.

Grades 6-8 also meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Confirmation at Advent is a two-year program starting with 8th grade and ending at the end of 9th grade with a spring Confirmation ceremony.  Their study focuses on the Fundamentals of Faith, and students explore topics including "Who is God? Who is Jesus?" and  "What about the Bible - what's in it?  How do I read it?  How do I apply it to my life?"

Other Confirmation requirements include:
  • A student commitment to regularly
        attend Sunday worship at Advent;
  • Performance of a minimum of 5 service hours
         at Advent;
  • Attendance at a fall overnight retreat.
Confirmation students meet Sunday afternoons, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

"Ignite" is our senior high ministry for students in grades 9-12.  We want our senior high students to be on fire for God - and to be beacons of light, love and hope in our world.

Ignite meets Wednesday evenings from 7:45-8:45 p.m.
Senior high students also meet Sunday mornings during the 10:45 a.m. worship hour for a student-led discussion group.
