IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING

What if "church" were a verb instead of a noun?

What if church was not a location to come to and stay within, but a base of operation for expressing your faith by moving out into communities and around the globe to become part of God's plan for world transformation?

If you found such a "place," would you come?

You are invited to explore the Advent UMC website to see for yourself how the people of Advent are rethinking and renewing what the church is and should be in the 21st century.

We are an active and engaged faith community.  We hope you will find a doorway at Advent that you will be comfortable walking through in order to connect with God, with the world around you, and with a community of people that will love and care for you and help you along the journey of your life.

GROWING

Our Purpose Statement
To cooperate with the Holy Spirit,
by inviting all people into relationship with Jesus Christ

What if "church" was thought of not as a building, but as thousands of doors, each of them opening to a different concept or experience of church, so that whoever knocks might find a journey to call their own?

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Baptism?
Baptism is a symbol of new life and a promise of God’s saving love. For United
Methodists, baptism is the sacrament of initiation that joins us with the church and
with Christians everywhere. In the United Methodist Church, both infants and
adults can be baptized. A person receives the sacrament only once in his or her life.
Water and shells are the special symbols of baptism.

    What is Communion?
The Lord’s Supper (also called Holy Communion) is a meal of bread and wine (non-alcoholic juice
is used at Advent) that symbolizes the body and blood of Christ. By sharing this meal, we give
thanks for Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins. The Lord’s Supper helps us recall the life, death and
resurrection of Jesus and celebrates the unity of all of the members of God’s family. In the United
Methodist tradition, The Lord’s Supper is served at an “open table” and any person who wishes to
receive the sacrament may do so. Children are welcome at the discretion of the parents. A
Communion preparation class is offered to Second Graders on the first Sunday of February every
year. Advent offers Communion on the first Sunday of every month and occasional special
      services as well.

Can I have my wedding at Advent?
We are pleased to be able to offer our support and ministry to you at this very important and memorable time in your life. Your most immediate concerns are probably around the details of your wedding day. This is your wedding. We wish to help you make it special by supporting you in preparing a meaningful and worshipful wedding service. Our Wedding Coordinator along with either Pastor Judy Zabel or Rev. Cindy Yanchury will meet with you for an initial intro/planning meeting to begin coordinating all of the details.

In addition to our concern for the actual details of your wedding day, we must also be very concerned about the many days of your life together after that!   According to Pastor Zabel, " there are increasing pressures on marriages and expectations in family relationships these days, and often there are fewer stable natural support systems available to couples as they embark on the journey of marriage."   At Advent, we not only pray for God’s blessing as you share your vows, but seek to provide a context to consider the challenges of marriage. We are available to support you in developing better understanding of the dynamics of your life together through pre-marriage counseling, using the PREPARE pre-marital inventory to explore aspects of your unique relationship.  This preparation is required if you wish to be married at Advent UMC.  We wish to assure you that we are personally interested in you, and will be glad to respond to your questions anytime along the way.

How are funerals conducted at Advent?
We are here to serve our community in any way we are able during the difficult time that surrounds losing a loved one. Please contact the church office to get more information and to schedule funeral services.
